Tenwek Letter 3
28 November 2008
Chamekei! We hope each of you had a fantastic Thanksgiving!
Wednesday we went to the restaurant for lunch—good ol' samosas, chips, and a black current fanta!J At lunch our friends, Wesley and Charity Koech, greeted us. You might remember our stories of traveling to Kelitien Church and the brakes failing or walking eight hours in the surrounding hillsides with them. It was wonderful to see them again. Their children are doing well, also. While heading back down the hill towards home, we ran into Daisy Muruka. Daisy's husband, Kays, and Bryan worked together on Maternity. Kays is currently training in Nairobi.
Our Thanksgiving was filled with playing outside, reuniting with more friends, and sharing our Thanksgiving dinner with the Friess Family next door. It's as if Wil learned from the Manchester, Chupp, Bemm, Roberts, and White boys that when you're at Tenwek, grab a stick and have a ball! He loves the common areas on the compound, swings and all. He gets so excited when he sees the boys climbing trees or rolling down the hills!
Also, Wil and I had to make a trip to the mailroom to deliver some US mail. While in that direction, we popped in Community Health. How wonderful it was to be back in that building, remembering all the days spent there trying to figure out whether they were speaking in Swahili or Kipsigis (and always reminding that I only knew English!). We, of course were greeted by one of my best friends, Gladys. Oh, how Gladys can make a person laugh! She's the sweetest. Right before Bryan and I left in 2006, Gladys got married. Now, she surprised me with the news of a baby boy,
Gaddrel Ethan Karaya Kibet. Ethan, as I prefer to call him is nine months old, I believe. He's such a cutie! Congratulations, Gladys!
In the afternoon, we went to the Bemms/Galats' home and swung for a long while. Wil loved swinging and watching Janet take clothes off the line across the way. Peter Rono came by as we were playing in the poinsettia tree. Wil absolutely loves Peter. He just laughed and laughed! As I've said before, Peter is one in a million.
Sarah invited us for dinner last night. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving taco dinner with friends! It's hard to believe it's Thanksgiving without all the fall colors and turkeys everywhere. Friends and fellowship are abundant though.
Bryan had a good day Thursday, he had many cases for the day, but only got to see one patient, if I understood correctly. The others' blood pressures were too high. He was not on call, so that was very nice. He is, however, on call all weekend, Tues., and Thurs.
Today, Wil, Sarah and I went to Dr. Carol Spears' house to borrow a blender for carrot soufflé for Thanksgiving lunch tomorrow. MAN, it was SO breath-taking from the way we left it. She's definitely making it hers, which she should. "Face-lift" doesn't even begin to describe it. Carol, it's just beautiful! You truly inspire us!
This evening, we'll be having the traditional Friday night dinner, pizza. We've invited the Friess' over and hopefully Agneta, if she's in town.
Just to let you know, so you can celebrate with us, Wil slept through the night last night! YEAH!!!!!! I feel like a new woman (with dirty Tenwek hair).J
Have a wonderful weekend!
In Him,
Jane, Bryan, and Wil
