Tenwek Letter 1
24 November 2008
This letter may come as a surprise to some of you, but yes, we (Wil included) are back at Tenwek Hospital, Bomet, Kenya for two weeks! "Greetings from Tenwek". I hope to be able to post these letters to our blog: www.myersfamilymoments.blogspot.com., but we'll see… You're also welcome to email us anytime. (I will get pictures of Wil's birthday up asap.)
Thank you for your prayers for our journey and time here at Tenwek!!!!!
I will begin with a summary of our travel from Nashville to Nairobi. Very uneventful!J We were delayed only one hour in Amsterdam because of a snowstorm, but that is all.
God is so faithful. While entering the restroom in Amsterdam, Wil and I met Sarah Frise (sp) and her youngest daughter Meredith. Sarah is an OB/GYN, her husband Malin is a dentist, and we found out they are coming to Tenwek with the Post-Residency program Bryan and I came through. (Sarah and Malin will be at Tenwek for three months, then possibly head to Cameroon for the rest of their stint w/WMM). As mentioned above, they have two daughters, Meredith, the youngest, and Amelia. The girls are such a delight—especially for Wil!J We had time to get to know them as we waited for our visas at the airport, helped them collect all 13 trunks, and rode "matatu-style" to our guesthouses (GH) for the evening. Of course at trip from Nairobi to ANYWHERE has it's exciting times. On our way to the Ghs, right before entering Mombassa Rd., our car died. So, we waited for another van, unloaded, loaded, and headed on our way. We each arrived safely to our evening abodes.
On Sunday, Daniel our Samaritan's Purse (SP) driver, took us to Nairobi Java House for breakfast and Nakumatt for our scant shopping. (It seems scant for only two weeks, not purchasing for at least one month at a time!) Oh, how nice it was to be back in Nairobi—and NOT have to drive! After picking up our supplies, we began the journey to Tenwek, of course stopping in Narok for a break. The roads are still…holey, no surprise. Wil and I slept some on the way. We entered Bomet and I just smiled—"we're almost home (there)." The road from Bomet to the 5-mile road ("Tenwek Road") is being readied for work, so we snaked back and forth until we found the "Tenwek Road". We arrived at Tenwek, ate lunch with the Roberts, found a place to stay (not the planned place, because no one could find the keys), and moved our things plus most of the Frise's trunks to our home in the short rains of the afternoon. After drying out and cleaning up, we headed to the GH for a wonderful pancake dinner with the Anderson family (three children). Of course, Wil is TOTALLY soaking up all the kids—missionary kids ((MKs and Kenyans alike!) When we returned home, unpacked a bit, and put Wil to bed. He slept for about two-three hours and awoke a little before midnight. We fed him; didn't work; I read to him; didn't work; got out the Benadryl; still not working; we went to the carpet and played and played. He finally went to sleep with Bryan.
Today brought us much reuniting! After Bryan headed up the hill for morning report, Wil and I ate breakfast and played outside. We've seen house helpers Paulo, Hannah, Sarah, Betty, Livingston, Emily (Mercy's at her grandmother's), Peter Rono, Juluis (Bryan treated his wife, Nayosumatt for cancer in 2005-06), and countless hospital staff. For those of you who might remember and not know, Sandy Chupp, the dog Bryan and I took care of for three months, passed away three weeks ago, so I am very sad not to be greeted by my white furry friend! It is not as warm without Sandy! Of course we miss the families who were here at our last visit; but, we're enjoying meeting the new families, Fitzwaters, Galats, Haywards.
Bryan's loving being back! He found out that Caleb Mina is not here today (so Bryan's the only OB/GYN), was called for a c-section after only a few minutes in morning report, he's on call tonight, plus he was supposed to do a lecture after lunch! He had no clue and was able to delay his lecture to next week.
So, for the afternoon, after Wil wakes up, we will enjoy outside until the rains come, then come in and make some pizza dough and tortillas!
Love,
Bryan, Jane & Wil
PS
I hope I've sent this to all I promised, if not, and you know, please tell me! Asante Sana!
